Innovation in Dual Stage Filtration

Why Filtration Matters

For large residential pools, like this Dubai estate, which is 170 m³ (170,000 litres) as well as commercial pools with heavy bather loads, effective water filtration is essential.

The system must keep conditions crystal-clear, capture even the finest debris, and handle fluctuating flow rates - all while minimising water and energy use. In outdoor pools exposed to intense sun and high evaporation, these demands become even more critical, making reliable, efficient filtration non-negotiable.

Focusing on the following core hydraulic and filtration parameters enables pools to achieve consistently high water clarity, without introducing unnecessary system complexity.

Flow rate – the right filtration velocity (m³/h, L/min) keeps water moving efficiently through the system

Media quality – consistent size, shape, and uniformity ensure fine particles are captured

Bed depth – sufficient media depth traps the smallest debris

Hydraulics – even water distribution prevents dead zones and maintains consistent performance

Backwashing – proper fluidisation clears trapped debris quickly, sustaining optimal filtration

These principles led Waterco Middle East to challenge the conventional filtration approach. The resulting specification delivers a more efficient, practical solution that streamlines the overall system, maintains exceptional water clarity, and lowers capital costs by roughly 80%.

Rethink Regeneration

The original specification called for regenerative filtration, a familiar choice in a region requiring consistent water clarity and stable hydraulic performance. While technically capable, this approach introduced greater system complexity, higher capital costs, and ongoing maintenance requirements that warranted closer examination.

Waterco Middle East applied a structured value engineering process to review the specified filtration objectives and identify a solution capable of delivering the same - or improved - performance in a more efficient and practical way. The process went beyond cost alone, refining overall system configuration, simplifying operation, and enhancing long-term durability without compromising results.

The outcome was Waterco’s Ultimate Dual Stage Filtration System, combining MultiCyclone pre-filtration with Glass Pearl Filter Media housed in seamless, lightweight Micron fibreglass filters. This integrated solution met the requirements of the original brief while delivering additional efficiency gains.

Equally important, dual-stage filtration addresses practical considerations often overlooked at the specification stage, including high upfront costs, complex servicing requirements, and reliance on proprietary media and supply chains - all of which can influence project viability, long-term operational confidence, and client satisfaction.

The following pages take a closer look at the two key components of the system, highlighting how each element works in tandem to deliver improved water clarity, efficiency, and streamlined performance.

Stage 1: MultiCyclone Pre-Filtration

The MultiCyclone Centrifugal Filter removes up to 80% of incoming dirt before it reaches the main filter, reducing system load, improving hydraulic stability, and extending filtration cycles.

How Waterco’s MultiCyclone works

- Water spins through 70 cyclone chambers, using centrifugal force to separate debris

- Sediment spins outward and settles into the collection chamber

- Filtered water reverses direction and rises through the central outlet

- Debris is easily monitored via inspection ports

- Purge valve enables quick, low-water cleaning

Result: Most of the incoming dirt is removed before the main filter, reducing maintenance, stabilising hydraulics, and saving water.

MultiCyclone 70XL

Designed for high flow rates, the 70XL delivers reliable performance in demanding environments.

- Simplified, low-maintenance design with no filter media to clean or replace

- Reduces main filter load and minimises backwash water use

- Maximum flow rate of 90 m³/h (90,000 litres p/h) for high-capacity applications

- Compact, space-saving footprint ideal for new builds or retrofits

By removing a high proportion of incoming debris upfront, MultiCyclone improves water clarity and filter efficiency, while also reducing ongoing operational demand.

Stage 2: Glass Pearl Filter Media

The second stage of this dual filtration system uses Glass Pearl Filter Media for advanced depth fine filtration throughout the filter bed.

Key performance benefits include:

- Filtration down to below 3 microns

- Reduced backwash volume by one-third

- Lower head loss for improved hydraulic efficiency

- Chemically inert and contaminant-free

- Smooth surface for easier servicing

- Decreased energy, water, and chemical use

- Suitable for new builds and retrofits

- Independently tested and certified

Glass Pearl ensures crystal-clear water while maximising system performance and reliability.

Micron Fibreglass Filters

Waterco’s Micron Fibreglass Filters house the Glass Pearl Filter Media in a seamless, high-strength vessel made from continuous fibreglass filaments. Wound under controlled tension, these filters are free from welds, seams, or linings that can corrode or degrade over time.

A key feature is the hydraulically balanced “Fish Tail” or “Fish-Bone” laterals, which ensure even flow during filtration and backwashing. It also helps maintain stable pressure and maximise cleaning efficiency for consistent performance and longer media life.

Together, MultiCyclone and Glass Pearl Filter Media form an integrated dual-stage filtration solution that delivers crystal-clear water, energy efficiency, and reliable operation.

Tested, Proven, Certified

Glass Pearl Filter Media has been independently tested at UNSW Water Research Laboratory, Australia’s largest hydraulics lab, and proven to deliver exceptional filtration, superior hydraulic efficiency, and reduced backwash requirements.

Key performance benefits include:

Ultra-fine filtration – captures particles smaller than 3 microns

Hydraulic efficiency – lowers head loss across the filter bed by 37%

Backwash efficiency – one-third the backwash rate, up to 66% less water

Further validating its credentials, Glass Pearl is Climate Care Certified by the Swimming Pool and Spa Association of Australia, recognising its performance across sustainability, efficiency, and operational criteria.

Waterco: Ultimate Dual Filtration

This installation demonstrates that Waterco provides the solution for achieving regenerative-level water clarity, without the complexity and cost traditionally associated with these systems.

In regions where water is scarce, energy costs are high, and expectations for crystal-clear water are uncompromising, performance certainty is critical. The system integrates advanced centrifugal pre-filtration with high-performance media filtration, engineered to optimise hydraulic efficiency, reduce backwash demand, and consistently deliver superior water clarity.

Client satisfaction speaks for itself:

"My client, our whole team, and I are absolutely thrilled with the results of using Waterco’s Glass Pearl Filter Media, MultiCyclone, and Micron filter. Having worked in pool construction since 2006, I have never seen water this crystal-clear. We will be specifying this system for our premium projects.” — Lavlesh Raut, Managing Director, SwimTech Dubai

With Waterco, premium pool filtration is not more complicated — it’s smarter, more efficient, and built to perform.
